Grade 9 Honours Math
Wednesday June 7: That's the ball game! For the last 3 days of AM classes, attendance will be optional. I will be there to go over any review that you would like. Good luck on the exam. Want to see a very cool video?
Check this out - it talks about some of the rather odd ideas that I have brought up in class lately.
Tuesday June 6: no class today
Monday June 5: we started with a couple new examples of 2 equation and 2 unknown word problems. Then we went over some requests. We ran out of requests so I showed students the "solution" to Grandi's Series - weird, but fun to think about. No AM class tomorrow morning. Test Wednesday.
Friday June 2: we went over the complicated algebra systems from yesterday and did some word problem requests from the
Systems of Equations booklet. You should be finished it by Monday. If you are ready to move on work in the
More Systems of Linear Equations booklet - it has an
answer key here. The test will be Wednesday after school.
Thursday June 1: we went over the Functions test. I gave you some examples of 2 equations and 2 unknowns questions that are a little more challenging in the algebra department - we will go over them tomorrow. I heard that a few people were finished the
Systems of Equations booklet, so I handed out a review called
More Systems of Linear Equations it has an
answer key here.
Wednesday May 31: after a couple more problem solving examples we did some requests from the page 6-7 and page 16-18 assignments of the
Systems of Equations booklet. You should now be on the page 20-23 assignments.
Tuesday May 30: we did some examples of some 2 equations and 2 unknown problems that require 3D surface area to solve. Really, it was just an excuse to make you use your calculators to practice big button punches.
Monday May 29: more 2 equations and 2 unknowns. We did some problems together, including a request from the booklet. You should now be done the page 6-7 and page 16-18 assignments. Today, you should work on the page 20-23 assignments.

Systems of Equations booklet.
Thursday May 25: we went over some Functions booklet questions that a few people had to get ready for this afternoon's Functions test. We looked at our first system of 3 Equations and 3 Unknowns (don't worry, they're too long to put on a test) and I showed the relationship between that and 3D coordinate space. I also showed how to use a matrix to solve a system of equations - something you might not get formally introduced to for a couple more years. In class today, if you are finished the Functions booklet and are ready for the test, work on the assignments on pages 6-8 and pages 16-18 of the
Systems of Equations booklet booklet.
Tuesday May 23: we finished going over the
graphing non-linear functions activity from last week and we continued our introduction to the
Systems of Equations booklet where we discussed the 3 algebraic methods to find intersection points of linear equations. We also took a few requests from the
Functions (
here is the answer key) booklet which we will be testing on Thursday.
Friday May 19: we didn't do anything new today - just a housekeeping day, we went over questions people had on the last few tests and filed them in the folders. You should be finished the
Functions (
here is the answer key) booklet by Tuesday because we will be testing it next THURSDAY (see above) - we'll talk about that on Tuesday.
Thursday May 18: we did a graphing warm up to introduce our Systems of Equations booklet where we found intersection points of linear equations. Then we started to go over the answers to the
graphing non-linear functions activity from Tuesday. We'll finish that up tomorrow. You should be finished the
Functions (
here is the answer key) booklet by Tuesday because we will be testing it next THURSDAY - we'll talk about that on Tuesday.
Wednesday May 17: we looked further at combining functions such as f(g(x)) and piecewise functions. We even looked at the famous
batman function. You can now finish the
Functions (
here is the answer key) booklet. Don't forget to omit Exercise 54 #17 and 19. We will test on this booklet next Wednesday. Reminder that tomorrow we go over the
graphing non-linear functions activity from yesterday.
Tuesday May 16: today we met in the computer lab and did a warm up and then a
graphing non-linear functions activity. We will correct that activity sheet on Wednesday. In your regular class today, if you can't get to a computer to finish the activity from this morning, you can work on Exercise 54 of the
Functions (
here is the answer key) booklet (omit #17 and 19).
Monday May 15: today it was Substitution and Functions. We did examples together of substituting values and polynomials into functions. You can now finish all of Exercise 50 for tomorrow.
Friday May 12: we looked at more examples of function types: cubic, absolute value, stair-step, and inverse. In class today, do Exercises 48,49 and (the end of) 50 in the
Functions (
here is the answer key) booklet. You should be done them by Tuesday.
Thursday May 11: we continued our look at functions and functional notation. You can now do Exercises 48,49 and 50 in the

Functions (
here is the answer key). We looked at the introductory lesson. If you are finished the Analytical booklet, you can read the first 7 pages of the Functions booklet and try Exercise 48.
Friday May 5: we looked at how to find the equation of a line given a point and the slope (or equation of) a parallel or perpendicular line.
Thursday May 4: we looked at the final new skill of the unit - finding the equation of a line when you are given a point (or a fact that leads to the coordinates of a point) and a line that you are either parallel to or perpendicular to. You can now do Exercises 15 and 16. You should be finished the entire booklet no later than Tuesday, since we are testing on it on Wednesday.
Wednesday May 3: we looked at a couple of probability/expected outcome problems from Exercise 10 of the Radicals booklet (the answer key for #2 had the wrong answer - it looks like it was answering a completely different question). Then we did a lesson for Exercise 14 of the
Analytical Geometry unit Booklet (
here is the answer key). Next week's test will cover all of that booklet.
Monday May 1: We looked at how to use slope and a point to find the equation of a line.

Mid-Point Formula and the
Slope Formula today. You can now do Exercises 4-7 in the
Analytical Geometry unit Booklet (
here is the answer key - you have to hunt a bit for these answers - pay close attention to the question numbers).
Tuesday April 25: our warm up today was a little longer than usual as we did a
review activity to prepare for tomorrow's test. If you can do all of these, tomorrow's test should be a piece of cake. If you want to watch me go over those questions again,
here is a video of me doing them. Then we finished off yesterday's introduction to the
Distance Formula. If you want to see that lesson again, watch the video above. You can now finish the rest of the
Radicals and Rational Exponents booklet (
answer key).
Monday April 24: we finished looking at the Expectations lesson. You can now try the rest of the
Radicals and Rational Exponents booklet (
answer key). The test on Wednesday will not have Expectation questions - it will focus only on the radical and rational exponent questions. I handed out the
Analytical Geometry unit Booklet. We started the first lesson, for Exercise 4, on the
Distance Formula. We'll finish it tomorrow. If anyone wants to start working on it,
here is the answer key.

Tuesday April 4: Our last class until we did a couple of composite surface area and volume problems and some requests from old assignments. For the test next week, you must complete the following:
-
In the
Measurement booklet complete the "your turn" questions on pages 7-11, and 13, the "Exercise 5-2" odds on sections A and B and part C questions #4, 7-10, pages 30 and 31 (
here is the answer key for those two pages - it appears that Page 30 Part B #2 has a wrong answer: it should be 99.33 m^2- the rest of the answers are right, just keep in mind they use pi = 3.14 when they calculated them).
-
the
Review handout questions in sections 1.1 (all), 1.3 (all), 1.4 #9,12, 1.5 #15,19, 1.6 #19,20-23, 1.7 #25,27, Practice Test (all)Monday April 3: Welcome back. Today we started with a problem that combines trig and measurement (and history!). Then we did some requests from previous assignments and looked at the surface area and volume of a sphere. In regular class time, work on the problems on pages 30 and 31 of the
Measurement booklet (
here is the answer key for those two pages) or sections 1.4 to 1.7 of the
Review handout. At home tonight, check out
this video and
this video. Reminder that the Pascal hand in is due Friday.
Friday March 24: we looked at finding conversion rates given a percentage fact and did a surface area and volume problem that involved trig. The flagpole/berm activity is due today. By the Monday after the break you should be done all of the assigned questions from earlier in the week:
- the Similar Triangles and Trigonometry Booklet should be finished (see updates below for answer keys).
- In the Measurement booklet you should be done the "your turn" questions on pages 7-11, and 13, the "Exercise 5-2" odds on sections A and B and part C questions #4, 7-10
- the Exercises handout questions 3-13 and 19-22
- the Review handout questions in sections 1.1 and 1.3
- if you are done all of that, start on pages 30 and 31 of the Measurement booklet (here is the answer key for those two pages). But you will have more time (and see more examples) after the break for that section.
- The Pascal hand in is now officially due April 7th (band students hand it in before you leave on the trip). You can choose any 2 questions EACH from Part A, B, and C of the 3 contests and any 1 problem from part D of the last contest as your hand in. You have to have full solutions written out to get full credit.Thursday March 23: we looked at how to calculate fractions of an inch rather than decimals. Then we played with the surface area of a tetrahedron. Can you come up with the simplest formula for it's volume? See yesterday for assignments (and watch the videos!). Reminder that the Flagpole activity write up is due tomorrow.
Wednesday March 22: we looked at an example of using unit conversions when working with scale maps. Then we looked at Volumes of Prisms, Cylinders, Pyramids, and Cones. If you are wondering where the volume of a pyramid/cone formula comes from,
watch this and
this. If you are finished all of the assignments from yesterday, you can start on pages 30 and 31 of the
Measurement booklet (
here is the answer key for those two pages).
Tuesday March 21: we looked at unit conversions in the Imperial System of Measure. I handed out a couple of supplements to the main

Here is the answer key to the last two pages (full solutions!) If anyone is ready to keep going today, I briefly discussed the link between the metric units of cubic length and volume and you can no try the odd numbers on pages 2-4 (
here is the answer key).
Tuesday March 14: Happy pi Day! We did a warm up that shows how the trig functions are linked to pi and then did some problems from the Trig Booklet. Here is the
answer key for the review on pages 45-47. Check out
this proof that pi exists and
this method to calculate it and
what it sounds like.
Then there is this one - it's closer to the actual way Archimedes himself would have estimated a value for pi (Archimedes, of course, would not have had a spreadsheet). Test tomorrow - you should be finished the Trig booklet up to page 47. Now that the weather is nice groups can start working on the Page 41 activity. The Pascal Project will have to be handed in before spring break - we'll select the question numbers to be handed in soon.
Monday March 13: more example problems with multiple triangles today. Then I handed out the next booklet
Measurement. If you are finished the Trig booklet, you can start on the odd numbered questions on pages 2-4 (
here is the answer key). Reminder that the Trig quiz on Pages 43 and 44 was to be handed in today.
Friday March 10: we looked at solving trig problems that involve 2 triangles, found a couple mistakes on the answer key: for page 22, the last question should be b = 6.2 cm, for page 36 #13 the angle should be 59 degrees, and #14 is 68 degrees. We also did the last example from page 42 together. You should now be finished up to page 40 of the
Similar Triangles and Trigonometry Booklet .
Here is the answer key for pages 22-36. Pages 37-40 have their own key on page 40. For Monday, you will HAND IN pages 43 and 44. You should finish pages 45-47 for Tuesday. Friday Sept 9: Still waiting on course outlines - my apologies! Today we discussed some of the skills from previous grades that you may want to brush up on. If you want practice with topics from grades 5-7 I highly recommend the following two websites:
Mathopolis is a fun site with good drill and practice games and timed exercises. It's free, but a sign-up is required for the really fun stuff.
Not free, but not overly expensive, and in my opinion, worth every penny is the
IXL website. I especially like that you can match directly to the MB curriculum. We also looked a little bit at perfect square numbers and worked on our strong beginnings assessment. No new assignment.
Thursday Sept 8: Welcome back. Course outlines have not yet arrived from the printer. Today we started with some light discussion. No assignments yet.
